About the 2005 World AIDS Marathon and 5K Fun Walk The 2005 World AIDS Marathon and 5K Fun Walk,
to be held in Gainesville, Florida, on 4 December, 2005,
will benefit AIDS research at the University of Florida
at Gainesville, as well as other AIDS and brain-cancer
related work. For the specific breakdown of where the
net proceeds will go, please visit the “About
The Foundation” page.
The Marathon course will wend its way through beautiful
Gainesville, which is noted for its historic buildings
and “urban forest” – lots of sub-tropical
greenery mixed into the cityscape. In addition to its
local attractions, it’s only a one hour drive
to either the Gulf of Mexico or the Atlantic Ocean,
or two hours to Disney World, Universal Studios, and
Busch Gardens. With a median resident age of 27 –
and, most important to our runners, mild winters –
Gainesville is a lively young town that is an ideal
place for this Marathon.(*)
Why Gainesville? The reason is frankly personal, and
sentimental. Richard’s wife Jodi, to whom his
book is dedicated, is an alumna of the University, and
their two college-age daughters are students there now.
“I chose the University at Gainesville to be the
main beneficiary as a tribute to Jodi,” Richard
says, “and also to honor my daughters.”
Notes Richard, “The University has already produced
one nationally-known product, Gatorade. Wouldn’t
it be great if it were to become even more well known
for having found the cure or vaccine for HIV/AIDS?”
The Marathon could use your help if you have expertise
in the area of corporate fundraising, or are willing
to sponsor some of the many “infrastructure”
costs such as water stations, professional race timing,
etc.
